About the College

 

J.B. Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital with its annexed Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital (Formerly known as Jamini Bhushan Astanga Ayurveda Vidyalaya and Ayurvediya Arogyashala including the Patipukur T.B. Hospital) was established in the year 1916 by renowned Ayurvedic Physician Late Kabiraj Jamini Bhushan Roy, M.A, M.B. The present building of the Institution at  170-172 Raja Dinendra Street, Calcutta-700004 was constructed in the year 1926. Before the establishment of the General Council & State Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine, Bengal the Institute used to confer the Diploma of L.A.M.S. (Licentiate in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery), Vishagratna. After its affiliation of the General Council and State Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine , Bengal in 1937 the Institution was following the course of studies and curriculum as laid down by the said body. The General council and State Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine were subsequently succeeded by the Paschim Banga Ayurved Parishad since 1961 to which the Institution is affiliated.

 The management and maintenance of the Institution “Jamini Bhushan Astanga Ayurveda Vidyalaya including Patipukur T.B. Hospital presently known as J.B. Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital with its annexed Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital” was taken over by the State Government with effect from 1st August 1964, for the conversion of the said Institution along with the attached hospitals into State Ayurvedic College and the running and maintenance there of along with the attached hospital for treatment and giving relief to the suffering people ordinarily on Ayurvedic principles with such amenities as may be practicable in accordance with terms of the scheme of management may be determine by the state Government from time to time. 

  The Institution at present imparts education and training in Ayurvedacharya (B.A.M.S.) 4 & ½ years course and 1 year compulsory rotatory Internship which is recognized by the CCIM, New Delhi, affiliated  earlier by Paschim Banga Ayurveda Parishad, Calcutta University and presently by The West Bengal University of Health Sciences from session 2004-2005 session.

Ayurvedic system have had to pass through difficult path at different points of time. Of late, it appears that this system at this part of India is at the threshold of a new era  & at the action of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal (AYUSH branch). This college has been declared as a model college.
